Inconsistent relationships among protection, benthic assemblage, habitat complexity and fish biomass in Mediterranean temperate rocky reefs

چکیده
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been proved to effectively protect and restore fish assemblages. There is mixed evidence regarding the effects of MPAs on benthic assemblages, habitat complexity, how protection might mediate features (including biotic abiotic components) with very little information concerning temperate areas. Here, our aim assess 1) influences assemblages 2) mediates complexity fishes. Using non-destructive methods (photosampling for shallow rocky underwater visual census using strip transects assemblages) characterize we sampled 15 Mediterranean locations, each including protected unprotected sites. In all, 90 sites, analyzed 2,760 photos 800 replicated transects, gathering 44 72 taxa. Abiotic, synthetic (i.e. combining previous two) indices computed synthesize features. Overall, whole did not significantly differ between conditions, but higher cover ecologically important erect algae belonging genus Cystoseira sensu lato was recorded within MPAs. show clear patterns related levels, displaying inconsistent responses different locations. Our findings highlight that has a generally positive effect biomass, this latter variable responding independently complexity. study, in conclusion, confirms can be effective rocky-reef highlighting need more in-depth exploration mechanisms determining taxa influence associated

متن کاملComparison between Model-Predicted and Field-Measured Stream Habitat Features for Evaluating Fish Assemblage–Habitat Relationships
—The use of model-predicted, local-scale habitat data as inputs in analyses intended to evaluate multiscale fish assemblage–habitat relationships in streams has become increasingly common as the scale at which such studies are conducted has increased. We used fish assemblage and habitat data from 208 wadeable streams in Wisconsin and Michigan to determine whether model-predicted habitat data wo...
متن کاملSeasonal Dynamics of Fish Assemblages on Breakwaters and Natural Rocky Reefs in a Temperate Estuary: Consistent Assemblage Differences Driven by Sub-Adults
Development of infrastructure around cities is rapidly increasing the amount of artificial substrate (termed artificial reef, 'AR') in coastal marine habitats. However, effects of ARs on marine communities remain unknown, because it is unclear whether ARs can maintain similar communities to natural reefs. We investigated whether well-established (> 30 years old) breakwaters could consistently a...
متن کاملFlat and complex temperate reefs provide similar support for fish: Evidence for a unimodal species-habitat relationship
Structural complexity, a form of habitat heterogeneity, influences the structure and function of ecological communities, generally supporting increased species density, richness, and diversity. Recent research, however, suggests the most complex habitats may not harbor the highest density of individuals and number of species, especially in areas with elevated human influence. Understanding nuan...
متن کاملThe Structure of Mediterranean Rocky Reef Ecosystems across Environmental and Human Gradients, and Conservation Implications
Historical exploitation of the Mediterranean Sea and the absence of rigorous baselines makes it difficult to evaluate the current health of the marine ecosystems and the efficacy of conservation actions at the ecosystem level. Here we establish the first current baseline and gradient of ecosystem structure of nearshore rocky reefs at the Mediterranean scale. We conducted underwater surveys in 1...
